Linux: accessing the command line in Gnome, acting as the root user, setting the resolution, shutting down Linux, adding and removing software to and from the shortcut menu

Accessing the command line: click on Activities on the top left of the desktop then type Terminal and click on the Terminal image.
Using the root User: in a terminal window type ‘su -‘. You will be prompted to enter the root password. This is not the recommended way to run commands – sudo is safer – so it is important to be extra careful when using the root user to run commands.

Setting the resolution: click on Activities on the top left of the desktop then type Settings and click on the Settings image. Scroll down the Left Hand Menu and click on Displays. Click on Resolution and then click on the resolution settings that you want.
Shutting down Linux: click on the down arrow on the top right of the desktop then click on ‘Power Off/Log Out’ then click on ‘Power Off…’

Adding software to the shortcut menu: click on Activities on the top left of the desktop then type the name of the software the you wish to add, right-click on the software’s image and click on ‘Add to Favourites’.
Removing software from the shortcut menu: click on Activities on the top left of the desktop, right-click on the software’s image in the shortcut menu and click on ‘Remove from Favourites’
